Today my mom and dad took me to my first swimming lesson. Like I really need lessons, I am a Golden. Because of my growth spurt, my front legs grew way to fast for the rest of my body, so I have been limping and not been able to run around as much as I want,

ahhhhhhhhhhh the pool!

So my brilliant parents brought me to Water4dogs down on Worth street to teach me how to swim and to help me build my muscles in my front legs, so I can play like the rest of my doggie friends. In hind sight, it was a great idea and although I look like it was a horror show, as the session went on, my strokes became more fluid and in 3 or 4 more sessions ( my parents paid for 10) I will be like Mark Spitz!

How awesome do I look?

The swimming instructors were pretty hot and I actually got both of their phone numbers.

Maybe I can take them both out at the same time?

I need a nap!

I have to tell you, this doggie training stuff is beginning to get on my nerves.

I would rather be eating my mom’s homemade Pasta with sweet and spicy Italian sausage, fennel and tomato sauce. I could sip a glass of Lucien Crochet Sancerre Rose and eat a piece of olive oil soaked roasted bread and call it a day. Alas- it was just a dream, my parents won’t feed me people food. Don’t they understand that I fit into the human category? I mean really!

Today was session four with Dogboy and we conquered a fear of mine that I have had since I was a puppy, STAIRS! Every since I came home to 194 Riverside Drive, my dad and mom have carried me down and up the stairs, yes I am a spoiled prince.

Big Pappa showing me how it gets done!

We walked over to The Soldier’s Memorial today and worked on going up and down on the stairs and I have to tell you that after 8 repetitions of stairs I felt like Sylvester Stallone in Rocky!

This is what I felt like after the stair lesson! Yo Adrienne!

We also worked on me sitting, staying, lying down on my tummy and then having to be in tummy position in order to get my food- it went really well.

I have to run- my mom has a new pair of Chloe Sandals that I want to eat, LATER!

I can't wait to eat mommy's shoes!

Training session # 3

After hanging with the rents all weekend up at our 55 acre estate in Claverack and running like the wind for 3 full days, I got to see my teacher this morning at 8:30 this morning……

I mean really, enough of this training crap already. I would much rather be having lunch at breakfast at Norma’s at the Le Parker Meridien than having to make believe I can do tricks on command- SERIOUSLY!

Today was an outside session- we walked by some of my favorite buildings on Riverside drive. 173-175 Riverside drive designed by John Carpenter of course everyone knows it is an impeccable full service building with an attentive staff. And 194 Riverside Drive (that is my crib!) designed by Ralph Townsend in 1902 will mill work that is astounding! My mom and dad just put together two apartments for the first duplex in the building…..

I really do love Riverside Park and we did some amazing things today, which of course I rocked all of the commands out! Why- because I am Randolph, El Ray of Riverside Drive!

I am not going to go into detail of what I did, but instead will show you in a list a photos!!!! A big Shout out to my teacher Robert Haussmann, he is my hero!

Last night I stayed out till 6am with my other Puppy friends….

We started out at the Puppy Mill Playhouse in Jersey (hung out with the cast of Jersey Shore) and then we headed back into the city in my chauffer driven Maybach (it is really Jay Z’s who lent it to me) Holla Jay!

We are sitting in the back- you probably can't see us.....

We ended up at Studio Puppy four in Times Square and rocked to the likes of Biggy Smalls and Jay Z…….

When I rolled home, I realized that I had Puppy School at 8:30 am at the crib and I figured, why go to sleep for 2 hours. So I had my butler, Mr. Z hook me up with a Red Bull and kibble concoction. I was bouncing off the wall and super ready for the teacher to arrive at 8:30 on the dot.

So in walks Dog boy aka Robert Haussmann with his tattoos and everything trying to represent BK to the fullest and I knew I had to be on my “A” game or I was going to be in trouble. http://dogboynyc.com/

Well, I already have the sitting thing down from last week’s session.

I learned to sit for a 5 seconds without moving, I learned to lie stomach down as well as being able to grab my favorite toy and then release it on command. The bottom line is that I am his #1 student and Dog Boy does not know this but not only do I represent the Upper West Side, but I also am “The El Rey” of Riverside Drive!!!!

Session #2 has ended and now it is time to play with my Aunt Heather!

I met Robert Haussmann today for my first day of one on one training.

He even came to my house, cause that is how I roll.

I learned how to sit and stay in a 60 minute period and I must say I am darn smart! I got an A- today until I tinkled on the living room floor. My teacher was very patient with me and I can’t wait to see him next week!

A bit about Robert:

My name is Robert Haussmann. I am both a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) and a professional memeber of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). I am passionate about the well being and proper care of domestic dogs. It is my belief that most people mean well in their dog training. However, many lack the invaluable education and experience needed to deter serious behavioral problems. I have worked for over three years as a dog trainer using humane reward based methods to achieve appropriate behavior from pet dogs. I teach dogs and their owners how to work together as a team. I am based in Brooklyn and have trained dogs and their loving owners all around the Tri-state area. I will come to your home and work with you and your dog in your environment.

Robert- my teacher has a company called DogBoy and he gets me and I get him……

here is his website: www.dogboynyc.com

This is his cell # 718-306-2190, but he prefers email:

rphaussmann@yahoo.com

If you want to chat with me more about my schooling, please email me at:

When I entered my new Riverside Drive apartment, I knew this was my home. I love the breeze that comes off of the Hudson and there is so little noise on the Drive! My parents have lived here a long time and are planning some really fun things for me as soon as I get my shots. Ralph Townsend created such a beautiful building for me and my family to live in back in 1902…..I wish I could have met him. They just don’t make buildings like these any more.

The president, Linda Vetrano, founded the organization three years ago, although she has been rescuing on her own for almost twenty years. She and the forty foster parents don’t have an office or facility, but still find ways to help these scared, lonely and homeless animals. 100% of the donations go directly toward desperately needed medical care, such as surgeries for illnesses and injuries, spaying, neutering, other medical expenses, and behavioral rehabilitation, as most of the animals were neglected, abandoned, abused or surrendered without sufficient care. The money won’t even go toward the fosters’ expenses, as we are all happy to provide our own food, dog and cat beds, leashes, etc., as if the animals were ours. So, your donation goes for the dog’s much more critical needs, thus allowing us to rescue even more animals, as we are constantly working on a very tight budget. If you cannot attend the fundraiser and wish to make a tax-deductible, please write a check to Posh Pets Rescue and send to our volunteer president and founder, Linda Vetrano: Linda Vetrano340 East 93rd Street, Suite 10ENew York, NY 10128 Any monetary contribution, no matter how big or how small, is beyond significant and greatly appreciated by Posh Pets Rescue.

Adoptions are down, and more abandoned pets are coming in. Some pet owners “can’t even afford food,” an official said.

At New York City’s main animal shelter, monthly calls to the volunteers who can help people keep their pets through tough financial times doubled, to 225 from 115, between January and September.

“We knew how valuable the program was, but now something like this hits, and people can’t afford vet care,” said Richard P. Gentles, the director of administration services for the shelter, Animal Care and Control of New York City. “Some can’t even afford food.”

Volunteers who work for the shelter’s four-year-old Safety Net program provide struggling pet owners with low-cost boarding or pet-training services, food donations, lists of apartment buildings that allow pets, even legal help if a landlord is trying to illegally evict a pet owner.

As the country’s financial crisis has deepened, more pet owners are asking the shelter for help.

Sadie Judge, 50, has been living with friends and relatives ever since she got sick and lost her teaching job at Brooklyn College as well as her apartment.

“I kept saying, ‘At least I’ve got my kitty cats,’ ” Ms. Judge said. But in early September, without her permission, she said, her roommate’s boyfriend took her four cats, Michael, Michelle, Molly and Gunzu, to Animal Care and Control, on East 110th Street between First and Second Avenues.

Ms. Judge said that after learning from her niece where her cats had been taken, she was told that she had 24 hours to get them out or they would be put up for adoption. But she had nowhere to take them. She was in tears when she happened to look up and see the Safety Net poster. Within two days, her cats were in two separate foster homes, and she hopes to get them back when she finds permanent housing.

Animal Care and Control took in 9.4 percent more pets in the first half of 2008 compared to the same months in 2007. However, in the 12 months that ended in August, 168 fewer dogs were adopted than in the previous 12 months.

“Probably because of the crisis, fewer people could make a commitment to adopt,” Mr. Gentles said. “It will be a huge problem for us if it continues.”

He said the agency needed to recruit three times the number of new foster homes for pets to keep up with demand, in part because many people who serve as foster petkeepers end up adopting them and leaving the program.

The situation is much the same at shelters throughout the country.

Betsy Saul, founder of Petfinder.com, a national pet adoption Web site, said that smaller shelters simply did not have enough food, while donations were plummeting. A survey conducted by her site found that 57 percent of shelters and rescue groups were seeing a decrease in adoptions.

“We’re hearing that individuals who are caring for feral cat populations with their own money or small rescue groups are feeding them bread soaked in water now, because there’s not enough cat food,” she said.

Veterinarians are concerned that pet owners may hold off on medical treatments, like hip replacements, that were more common during flush times, Ms. Saul said. And because research has shown that a typical pet owner starts considering euthanasia once the cost of treating an ill pet surpasses $500, they fear that more owners will make that choice sooner than they have in the past.

Kristen Levine, president of Fetching Communications, a public relations firm based in Florida that works with the pet industry, says veterinarians are finding that pet owners have become more likely to skip annual checkups to save money, even though early diagnoses can detect illnesses that get more costly over time.

“Some vets are offering special incentives for wellness visits, like a free microchip or free nail trimming, for giving something back to owners for recognizing the importance of preventative health care,” Ms. Levine said.

In the worst case, pets become homeless. The number of strays taken in by Animal Care and Control in September increased by almost 300, to 2,902, from last year. As the city’s only open-admissions shelter, Animal Care and Control has to euthanize animals after all adoption and foster care resources have been exhausted. Last year, it euthanized 15,768 animals, 55 percent fewer than in 2000.

At that shelter on Wednesday, two women — one of them crying — were surrendering a dog together. They declined to speak to a reporter because they said they were too upset. Nearby, another man was surrendering a stray cat, explaining that someone had dumped it in an alley near his apartment on the Lower East Side.

“If I could keep him I would, but I have three at home,” said the man, Ted Sterns, the chief stage manager for Merkin Concert Hall on West 67th Street, adding that the cat was trained to use a litter box and seemed to have been a pet. “Somebody dumped this poor baby out.”

But some people may find that as their savings evaporate, their need for companionship may grow stronger. This weekend at Madison Square Garden, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals will be holding its annual Adopt-a-Cat day, with hundreds of cats and kittens looking for new homes. Prospective owners can fill out a survey that will color-code their personalities to match with available animals.

On average, a cat costs $1,000 a year to maintain, compared with about $1,500 a year for a dog, Ms. Levine said. Having a pet can bring healthy returns, especially during bear markets.

“They comfort us; they don’t care if your 401(k) lost money today,” Ms. Saul of Petfinder.com said. “They’re one of the few people in the family who are not going to be stressed out about what you did with your money.”
